Aftershocks Hamper Venezuela Earthquake Rescue Efforts

Rescue operations in Venezuela are facing mounting challenges as a series of persistent aftershocks continues to rattle the country following two powerful earthquakes, forcing emergency workers to proceed with extreme caution amid fears of further building collapses.

Since the twin earthquakes struck on Wednesday evening, the affected regions have experienced repeated seismic tremors, disrupting efforts to locate survivors trapped beneath collapsed structures and to provide assistance to thousands of people who have lost their homes.

According to CNN, the continuing aftershocks have created an increasingly hazardous environment for rescue personnel working in disaster-hit areas. Every fresh tremor raises the risk of already weakened buildings collapsing, making search-and-rescue operations significantly more dangerous and slowing progress in reaching those still trapped beneath the rubble.

Speaking to CNN on Saturday, Loyce Pace, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Regional Director for the Americas, described the difficult conditions confronting humanitarian teams on the ground.

“Every time I speak to my team, they tell me they are feeling another tremor,” she said. “The earthquakes simply have not stopped. That is a very frightening situation. Rescue workers have to exercise extreme caution whenever they enter affected areas to deliver assistance.”

Her comments highlight the complex balance emergency responders must maintain between carrying out urgent rescue missions and protecting their own safety. Aftershocks are a common consequence of major earthquakes and can continue for days or even weeks, often causing further structural damage to buildings that have already been weakened by the initial shocks.

The repeated tremors have not only affected rescue operations but have also complicated the lives of residents attempting to return to their homes.

Pace warned that many damaged buildings remain structurally unstable and could collapse without warning.

“People naturally want to return home and feel safe again,” she said. “But the reality is that many buildings are now dangerous and could come down at any moment. Everyone will need to remain extremely cautious over the coming weeks.”

Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid entering visibly damaged structures until engineers have assessed their safety. Even buildings that appear intact from the outside may have suffered hidden structural damage, increasing the risk of collapse during subsequent tremors.

The continuing seismic activity has left many families unwilling to return indoors. Fearing stronger aftershocks or another major earthquake, large numbers of residents are spending their nights in temporary shelters and makeshift tents erected in open spaces away from damaged buildings.

Humanitarian organisations are continuing to provide emergency assistance to affected communities, including temporary shelter, food, drinking water and essential supplies. At the same time, rescue teams remain focused on searching collapsed buildings wherever conditions permit, although their work is frequently interrupted whenever fresh tremors are felt.

Earthquake specialists note that aftershocks are an expected part of the seismic cycle following major earthquakes. While most are weaker than the initial event, they can still pose serious risks, particularly in urban areas where buildings have already sustained significant damage.

As Venezuela continues its emergency response, rescue workers face the difficult task of operating in an environment where the ground remains unstable. For survivors, displaced families and emergency personnel alike, the persistent aftershocks have prolonged both the danger and the uncertainty, underscoring the scale of the humanitarian challenge in the wake of the devastating earthquakes.
