Sabina Yasmin’s Classic Love Song Returns After 44 Years

A legendary romantic song from the golden age of Bangladeshi cinema is set to return to the big screen more than four decades after it first captivated audiences. The iconic song Ei Mon Tomake Dilam, originally featured in the 1982 film Manosi, is being reintroduced in a newly arranged version for the forthcoming motion picture Dom. In a remarkable continuation of its legacy, the song is once again performed by celebrated vocalist Sabina Yasmin, whose voice defined the original rendition.

The new recording took place on Wednesday, 11 March, at a studio in the capital. Although the latest version retains the emotional depth and familiar melodic structure of the original composition, it has been refreshed with contemporary musical arrangements and newly added lyrics. These additional lines have been written by lyricist Tanmoy Parvez, while the musical arrangement and direction have been handled by Arafat Mohsin Nidhi. Joining Sabina Yasmin in the new recording is emerging singer Momin Biswas, marking a collaboration between a living legend and a new generation of vocal talent.

Originally written by renowned lyricist and filmmaker Gazi Mazharul Anwar and composed by Anwar Parvez, Ei Mon Tomake Dilam quickly became one of the most beloved romantic songs in the history of Bangladeshi cinema. The song’s enduring popularity has allowed it to transcend generations, remaining a deeply emotional and nostalgic piece for audiences even after more than forty years.

During a brief conversation at the recording studio, Sabina Yasmin shared her thoughts about revisiting the timeless piece. She explained that she agreed to record the new version because she appreciated the fresh arrangement and enjoys working with younger artists. She also praised the performances of actors Afran Nisho and Puja Cherry, who play key roles in the upcoming film, and expressed her best wishes for the success of the project.

Director Redowan Rony elaborated on the creative reasoning behind incorporating the classic song into the film. According to him, Dom is an emotional story centred on ordinary people confronting difficult circumstances. The filmmakers wanted a song capable of reflecting a wide spectrum of human feelings, including love, longing, hope, and resilience. In his view, Ei Mon Tomake Dilam has evolved beyond its original cinematic context to become part of the collective emotional memory of the nation.

The filmmakers sought and received the approval of the late lyricist’s family before proceeding with the project. His son Sarfaraz Anwar and daughter Dithi Anwar attended the recording session and conveyed their support for the creative reinterpretation of their father’s work.

Shahriar Shakil, Managing Director of the production company SVF Alpha-i Entertainment, explained that the idea emerged from the extraordinary musical partnership between Gazi Mazharul Anwar and Sabina Yasmin. Over the course of his prolific career, the lyricist wrote approximately twenty thousand songs, a significant number of which were performed by the celebrated singer.

Music director Arafat Mohsin Nidhi described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, noting that reinterpreting a classic song requires balancing respect for the original with the need to introduce something new. Meanwhile, Momin Biswas expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to sing alongside one of the most revered voices in Bangladeshi music.

The film Dom, bearing the tagline “Until the Last Breath”, is scheduled for release during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Produced by SVF Alpha-i Entertainment in partnership with Chorki, the film has already generated considerable attention. The screenplay has been jointly written by Redowan Rony, Syed Ahmed Shawki, Al-Amin Hasan Nirjhar, Mohammad Saifullah Riad, and Robiul Alam Robi.

With the revival of a beloved song and the return of a legendary voice, the film’s soundtrack is expected to evoke nostalgia among older listeners while introducing the classic melody to a new generation of cinema-goers.
