US Imposes Ebola Protocols on DR Congo Squad

The United States government has implemented stringent health protocols for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national football team ahead of the upcoming World Cup. These measures follow growing concerns regarding an Ebola outbreak within the DRC, which could potentially impact their scheduled fixtures, including a highly anticipated match against Portugal.

To mitigate the risk of transmission, US authorities have mandated that all members of the Congolese delegation undergo a 21-day period of isolation before being permitted to enter the country. This directive was officially communicated by American officials on Friday.

Strict Bio-Bubble Requirements

Andrew Giuliani, the Executive Director of the White House Task Force for the World Cup, confirmed the measures during an interview with ESPN. He stated that US officials have issued clear instructions to FIFA, the DRC national team, and the government in Kinshasa. The squad, currently conducting its training camp in Belgium, must remain within a controlled “bio-bubble” for the duration of the pre-tournament period.

“We have clearly informed the Congo that they must maintain the discipline of a bio-bubble for 21 days before arriving in Houston on 11 June,” Giuliani stated. He further emphasised that the Congolese government has been warned that failure to adhere to these bubble protocols will result in the team being denied entry into the United States. “It is impossible to be any clearer than that,” he added.

In a separate statement issued via the US Department of the Interior, Giuliani reiterated that the safety of the American public, the participating athletes, and millions of spectators remains the absolute priority. The administration is urging the DRC federation to keep its players away from unnecessary risks to ensure their participation in the tournament remains viable.

Epidemiological Context in the DRC

The decision marks a significant shift in policy. Previously, US officials indicated that the DRC national team might be exempt from the 21-day restriction currently imposed on foreign nationals travelling from the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan. However, the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) has necessitated a more cautious approach.

On Friday, the WHO reported specific figures regarding the current outbreak in the DRC, which is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This particular strain is noted for the absence of any currently approved vaccines or specific treatments.

Tournament Implications

The Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when they competed under the name Zaire. They have been drawn into Group K and are scheduled to play their opening match against Portugal—a team featuring star forward Cristiano Ronaldo—on 17 June in Houston.

The imposition of these health regulations underscores the logistical complexities of hosting a global event amidst regional health crises. The requirement for the 21-day isolation period in Belgium is designed to ensure that the DRC squad reaches Houston by the 11 June deadline, allowing them time to finalise preparations for their first group stage encounter.
