Bangladesh has recorded a continued rise in dengue infections, with the number of patients affected by the mosquito-borne disease crossing the 7,000 mark this year. A total of 196 new dengue cases were reported across the country in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of infections in 2026 to 7,306.
No new deaths were reported during the same period, according to the latest dengue situation report released by the Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Tuesday (7 July).
The report showed that among the newly hospitalised patients, the highest number of cases was recorded in Barishal Division, where 66 people were admitted for dengue treatment in a single day. Dhaka Division, including the two city corporations, reported 52 new patients, while Chattogram Division recorded 41 cases. Khulna Division reported 21 new admissions.
Other regions also recorded fresh infections. Mymensingh Division reported eight new dengue patients, Rajshahi Division recorded six, and Sylhet Division reported two cases. No new dengue patient was admitted in Rangpur Division during the 24-hour period.
According to health authorities, from 1 January to 7 July this year, a total of 7,306 people have been infected with dengue across the country. Dhaka Division has reported the highest number of cases overall, with 2,570 patients, including those in the capital city.
Barishal Division has emerged as another major hotspot, with 1,931 dengue patients admitted to hospitals during the period. Chattogram Division follows with 1,318 cases. Meanwhile, Khulna Division has recorded 905 infections, Rajshahi Division 258, Mymensingh Division 224, Sylhet Division 68 and Rangpur Division 32 cases.
The disease has claimed 19 lives so far this year. Among the fatalities, eight were reported in Dhaka Division, five in Mymensingh Division, and three in Chattogram Division. Barishal, Khulna and Rajshahi divisions each recorded one dengue-related death.
Health officials said 139 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 6,676 dengue patients have recovered after receiving treatment.
At present, 611 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals across the country. Of them, 141 patients are receiving care in hospitals within Dhaka city.
The rise in dengue cases has coincided with the monsoon season, when stagnant water creates favourable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of the virus. Health experts continue to advise people to remove standing water from homes and surrounding areas, as well as take preventive measures to reduce mosquito breeding and limit further transmission.
