France Wildfires Force 12,000 People To Evacuate

A devastating wildfire in southern France’s Pyrénées-Orientales region has forced at least 12,000 people to leave their homes as firefighters struggle to contain the rapidly spreading blaze. Around 800 firefighters have been deployed to battle the flames, but difficult weather conditions continue to make the operation challenging.

The fire intensified on Tuesday (7 July), particularly around the commune of Trevillach, where authorities ordered an emergency evacuation as flames advanced towards populated areas. Residents were moved to safer locations as a precautionary measure, with emergency services working to prevent further damage.

Local authorities, citing BFMTV reports, said the wildfire in Pyrénées-Orientales remained out of control despite the ongoing efforts. The blaze has already destroyed around 4,900 hectares of forest, causing significant environmental damage in the region.

Colonel Eric Belleguino, head of the Pyrénées-Orientales Fire and Rescue Service, said teams were working continuously to bring the situation under control as quickly as possible. However, he warned that the unfavourable weather conditions were slowing progress and that completely containing the fire in the short term would be difficult.

“The conditions remain complicated, with weather factors continuing to influence the spread of the flames,” officials said, as firefighters monitored changes in wind direction and temperature.

France’s weather service has warned that wildfire risks remain extremely high in three departments, while 61 other departments are facing a high level of danger. At the same time, an orange heatwave alert has been issued across 61 departments due to rising temperatures.

Weather forecasts indicate that temperatures across several parts of France could range between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. In some areas of the south-west, temperatures may climb as high as 41 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of further fire outbreaks.

The national weather agency has warned that the heatwave could continue until the end of the week, creating additional difficulties for emergency teams attempting to contain the wildfire. Dry conditions, strong winds and extreme heat have combined to create a highly volatile situation.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu told the National Assembly on Monday that approximately 14,500 hectares of forest had already been destroyed by wildfires across the country this season. He said the figure was nearly three times higher than during the same period last year.

Lecornu highlighted the growing impact of climate change, noting that rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves were increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires. He said the government was taking all necessary measures to support emergency services and protect affected communities.

The latest wildfire in southern France has once again raised concerns over the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow safety instructions until the situation improves.
