Tensions have flared along the international border in Habiganj district following the fatal shooting of a young Bangladeshi citizen by India’s Border Security Force (BSF). The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, has plunged a quiet rural community into profound grief and renewed local anxieties regarding safety and security along the frontier. Incidents of cross-border violence continue to strain community relations and highlight the persistent dangers faced by residents living in close proximity to the fence.
The tragic event unfolded during the morning hours of Sunday, August 30, within the Chimtibil frontier area located under Ahmadabad Union in the Chunarughat Upazila of Habiganj district. The deceased has been identified as twenty-year-old Sohag Mia, a local resident and the son of Shafiq Mia, whose family home sits near the border zone.
According to accounts provided by the victim’s uncle, Abdul Kadir, the morning began like any other routine day. Sohag ventured out towards the border fields to graze cattle, a common daily activity for locals navigating the rural landscape adjacent to the international boundary. Without warning or provocation, BSF personnel stationed across the line allegedly opened fire, targeting the young man directly. As hours passed and Sohag failed to return home, growing panic gripped the household. Family members and neighbours initiated a frantic search party, combing the perimeter near the frontier. Eventually, they discovered Sohag lying motionless and critically wounded on the ground within the border area.
Overwhelmed by shock, Abdul Kadir and other grieving relatives rushed to retrieve the young man, transporting him swiftly from the isolated border pocket to the Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex. Medical professionals on emergency duty, including Dr Sirajam Munira, conducted immediate clinical examinations upon arrival. However, their efforts proved futile, and Sohag was officially declared dead on arrival due to severe gunshot trauma.
Local law enforcement agencies responded promptly to reports of the fatality. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Islam of the Chunarughat Police Station formally confirmed the death of the youth to journalists. He stated that police teams secured the body and initiated administrative procedures, noting that a comprehensive post-mortem examination would be conducted to establish the exact medical cause and trajectory of the fatal injuries.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain an official statement from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)—specifically Habiganj Battalion 55—proved unsuccessful. Multiple telephone calls placed to responsible military and administrative officers went unanswered, and subsequent digital inquiries sent via WhatsApp messaging failed to elicit a response.
The tragic loss of life has cast a heavy pall over the border settlement, leaving villagers deeply shaken and fearful of further escalation. Community leaders and grieving family members have urgently called upon national authorities to launch a thorough, transparent investigation into the shooting and to pursue diplomatic channels to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies along the frontier.
