An ambulance driver was apprehended by police in Lohagara, Narail, on Sunday evening after local residents caught him attempting an act of necrophilia with the body of a young woman inside his vehicle. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Sagar Sheikh, suffered a public thrashing at the hands of an incensed crowd before officers intervened to take him into custody.

Sagar Sheikh, son of the late Kamrul Sheikh and a resident of the Laxmipasha oil pump area under Lohagara upazila, was picked up by a police team directly outside the Lohagara Upazila Health Complex.

Details surrounding the incident trace back to Saturday morning, when the deceased, Sadia Akter Lamia, took her own life at her family residence in Chhagalchhera village, located within Lohagara Union. Family members confirmed that the young housewife committed suicide by hanging herself with a scarf. Police officers subsequently arrived at the residence, recovered the body, and commenced the preliminary inquest report. That night, the corpse was placed inside a stationary ambulance parked near the police station premises, awaiting transfer to the district hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination.

Suspicion mounted late into the night when family members noticed the vehicle remained closed with the driver inside. Growing increasingly concerned, Sadia’s mother approached the vehicle to check on her daughter’s body. Upon peering inside, she caught the driver red-handed in the middle of attempting an act of desecration.

The grieving mother recounted the distressing scene, detailing how Sagar Sheikh had unclothed her deceased daughter inside the ambulance. She further noted that the driver had hung a traditional cotton towel (gamchha) over the vehicle’s windows, intentionally blocking any visual access from outside to conceal his actions. Her frantic cries for help instantly drew nearby passers-by and residents to the spot. The gathering crowd pulled the suspect out of the vehicle, administered a severe beating, and promptly handed him over to responding officers.

Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy of Lohagara Police Station confirmed the driver’s arrest and stated that the suspect was taken into official custody immediately after police arrived at the location. He added that law enforcement authorities are preparing the necessary legal documentation, reassuring the public that formal criminal charges will be pressed against the accused to ensure strict judicial action.
