Honeywell Garments Shut Indefinitely Amid Worker Protests

Garments Limited, located in the Ambag area of Konabari in Gazipur Metropolitan City, has announced an indefinite shutdown of its factory. On Tuesday morning, a closure notice was posted at the main gate of the factory. After seeing the notice, workers became agitated and began protesting. As of the time of filing this report at 1:30 pm, the protest was still ongoing.

According to the notice signed by the Assistant General Manager (Admin and Finance), workers raised what the authority described as unreasonable demands on Monday and stopped production, creating severe disorder and an unstable situation inside the factory. As a result, export-oriented operations were disrupted, causing significant financial losses to the company. Despite repeated requests from the management to resume work, the workers did not comply. The notice described the workers’ actions as an illegal strike.

The notice further stated that, in accordance with Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, the factory has been declared closed for an indefinite period. The date of reopening will be announced through a subsequent notice once the situation returns to normal. The management also urged all concerned to remain calm and avoid any activities that could worsen the situation.

Meanwhile, workers gathered at the factory gate on Tuesday morning and became angry after seeing the closure notice. They blocked the branch road from Mitali Club to Konabari New Market, disrupting traffic movement in the area. All types of vehicles were diverted, and arguments broke out between workers and drivers, causing suffering to commuters and local residents.

Inspector Md Morshed Zaman of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, Konabari Zone, said that discussions are underway with both workers and factory management to resolve the situation peacefully. Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, and the authorities remain on alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
