Bangladesh’s Sports Minister Aminul Haque has revealed that Jaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was once offered a position as goalkeeper for Chelsea Women’s Football Club, one of the top clubs in the English Premier League.
In a recent interview with local media, Minister Haque shared, “Our current Prime Minister’s wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and their accomplished daughter Jaima have an extraordinary passion for sports. During my visit to London to meet the Prime Minister, I had the opportunity to speak directly with both Dr. Zubaida and Jaima.”
Sporting Passion Runs in the Family
Minister Haque emphasised that both mother and daughter share a far greater enthusiasm for sports than the Prime Minister himself. He quoted the Prime Minister as saying:
“Aminul, my love for sports does not compare to that of my wife and daughter Jaima Rahman. They are a thousand times more passionate than I am.”
Standing tall and athletic, Jaima Rahman reportedly caught the attention of Chelsea’s scouts and was offered a role as goalkeeper. While her talent was sufficient to earn this opportunity, Minister Haque suggested that family priorities may have influenced her decision not to pursue a professional football career abroad.
“She is physically well-suited for goalkeeping. That opportunity was genuinely offered, but for reasons perhaps related to family priorities, she did not take it up,” he explained.
Interestingly, Minister Haque also revealed a lighter detail: despite the Chelsea connection, Jaima is reportedly a Manchester United supporter, mirroring the minister’s own allegiance, highlighting a playful contradiction in football loyalties.

This revelation has generated widespread curiosity and admiration among sports enthusiasts in Bangladesh. Many have praised Jaima’s skill and potential, while others have noted the unusual intersection of political prominence and international sporting opportunity.
