Pedestrian Killed in Fattulla Crash

A tragic road accident in Fattulla, Narayanganj, claimed the life of a 50-year-old female pedestrian after she was struck by a passenger bus while crossing a busy highway early Thursday morning. The incident occurred at around 6:30 am in front of the Ria Gop Stadium along the Dhaka–Narayanganj link road, casting a pall of grief over the local community.

The deceased has been identified as Lata Rani Mondal, wife of Sukh Ranjan Mondal, a resident of Pilkuni area in Fattulla. According to family members, she had left home early in the morning, as part of her usual routine, to complete essential errands. However, she never reached her destination.

Eyewitnesses reported that although traffic volume was relatively light at that early hour, several buses and goods-laden vehicles were moving at high speed. As Lata Rani Mondal attempted to cross the road, a speeding passenger bus reportedly struck her with great force. The impact threw her onto the road, after which the same bus collided with a covered van travelling ahead. The collision caused significant damage, including a shattered front section and broken window panes of the bus, according to witnesses.

Locals immediately rushed to the scene and rescued her in critical condition. She was transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors on duty declared her dead shortly after arrival.

Police from Fattulla Model Police Station responded promptly, visiting the accident site and initiating preliminary investigations. Authorities have confirmed that both the bus and the covered van involved in the collision are in the process of being seized for examination. Legal proceedings are being prepared in connection with the incident.

Residents of the area have long complained about frequent road accidents along the Dhaka–Narayanganj link road, particularly during early morning and late-night hours when vehicles tend to speed due to lighter traffic. They have highlighted the absence of adequate pedestrian crossing facilities, such as footbridges or designated safe crossing zones, forcing people to risk their lives while crossing the busy highway.

Traffic safety experts note that recurrent accidents in the region underline systemic issues, including poor traffic discipline, inadequate enforcement of speed regulations, and lack of pedestrian infrastructure. Without urgent intervention, they warn, such fatal incidents are likely to continue.

The victim’s family remains in deep mourning and has called for justice, urging authorities to identify those responsible and ensure appropriate legal action.
