A four-year-old boy has tragically lost his life after drowning in a pond while visiting his maternal grandparents’ home during the Eid holiday period in Dhunat upazila of Bogura district. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, 26 March, at approximately 4:30 pm in Mobuakhali village under Gosaibari Union. What began as a festive family gathering quickly turned into an atmosphere of deep sorrow and disbelief.
The deceased, Ayman Ali (4), was the son of Anwar Hossain from Sonargaon village in the same district. He had travelled with his mother, Aleya Khatun, to his maternal grandfather Ahed Ali’s residence in Mobuakhali village to celebrate Eid with relatives. According to family sources, the child had been staying there for several days prior to the incident, enjoying the festive period with other children in the household.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that in the afternoon, Ayman was playing outdoors with other children near the homestead. At one point, a football they were playing with rolled into a nearby pond. In an attempt to retrieve it, the child moved closer to the water’s edge. It is believed that he accidentally slipped and fell into the pond. As the area was not immediately supervised and the incident went unnoticed for some time, the child was not rescued promptly.
After an extended search by family members and local residents, Ayman’s lifeless body was eventually discovered floating in the pond adjacent to the house. He was immediately pulled from the water, but medical assessment confirmed that he had already died. The news triggered scenes of intense grief, with relatives and neighbours breaking down in tears as the joyous Eid environment turned into mourning within moments.
Local residents have expressed concern over the recurring risk posed by unprotected ponds and open water bodies in rural communities. Many emphasised that such accidents are not uncommon, particularly when young children are left to play unsupervised near water sources.
Police from Dhunat confirmed that necessary legal formalities were completed before the body was handed over to the family. Authorities also stated that no complaints had been filed in connection with the incident.
The entire village remains in mourning, with neighbours and relatives continuing to visit the grieving family. Despite collective efforts to console them, the sudden and tragic loss of the young child has left a profound sense of shock across the community.
