The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to forgo the traditional opening ceremony for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, opting instead for a restrained start in the aftermath of last year’s tragic crowd incident involving Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The decision has been taken as a mark of respect for the 11 lives lost during a stampede that occurred amid RCB’s title celebrations.
While the customary spectacle of music, celebrity appearances and fireworks will be absent on opening day, the BCCI has confirmed that a large-scale closing ceremony is planned for the final match of the tournament. The move reflects a deliberate balance between commemoration at the start of the season and celebration at its conclusion.

The new IPL season is scheduled to begin on 28 March at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening fixture. Unlike previous editions, however, the match will begin without any pre-match entertainment, stage performances, or ceremonial build-up typically associated with the league’s launch.
The BCCI and the IPL Governing Council have jointly agreed that the tournament should commence in a respectful and reflective atmosphere, paying tribute to those who lost their lives in last year’s incident. The focus, therefore, will remain solely on the cricketing action rather than off-field spectacle.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, quoted by Times of India, confirmed that the decision was taken to honour the victims of the 4 June tragedy. He stated that no cultural or entertainment programmes would be held on the opening day of IPL 2026.
He further emphasised that the board remains sensitive to the emotional impact of the incident on families, supporters, and the wider cricketing community, and that the decision reflects a collective sense of respect and responsibility.
This is not the first time the IPL’s opening ceremony has been cancelled. A similar decision was made in 2019 following the Pulwama terror attack, in which approximately 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel lost their lives.
At that time, the IPL was being overseen by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators. Funds originally earmarked for the opening ceremony were redirected towards financial assistance for the victims’ families, underscoring the tournament’s occasional role in responding to national tragedies.

The cancellation marks a significant departure from the IPL’s traditional image as a highly extravagant sporting spectacle. Opening ceremonies in previous seasons have typically featured high-profile musical performances, celebrity appearances, and large-scale visual production designed to launch the tournament with maximum fanfare.
This year, however, the focus will shift entirely to cricket on the field, with organisers prioritising solemnity over celebration at the outset of the competition. Nevertheless, the confirmation of a grand closing ceremony indicates that the league will still conclude on a celebratory note, with entertainment and spectacle reserved for the final stage of the tournament.
As the IPL prepares to begin under a more reflective tone, the BCCI’s decision highlights an effort to balance commercial entertainment with social sensitivity, acknowledging past tragedy while maintaining the league’s global appeal.
