Bus Overturns in Panchagarh Crash

A road accident in northern Bangladesh left several passengers injured after a bus carrying around 40 people lost control, struck a roadside tree and overturned in the middle of the road in Debiganj Upazila of Panchagarh District, Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon, 26 March.

The incident occurred in the Laxminarayani–Phultala area of Sundardighi Union, when a passenger bus of the ‘Shahi Paribahan’ service was travelling from Domar Upazila in Nilphamari to Dinajpur District. According to local accounts, the vehicle was moving at a relatively high speed when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to veer off the road and crash violently into a tree before overturning onto its side.

Witnesses described scenes of panic immediately after the crash, with passengers trapped inside the tilted vehicle calling for help. Local residents rushed to the spot without delay and began rescue operations, breaking open exits and assisting passengers out of the wreckage. Several injured individuals received first aid at the scene before being taken to nearby health facilities.

Emergency response teams from the fire service later arrived at the location. However, by the time they reached the site, most passengers had already been rescued and moved away by locals. Fire service personnel confirmed that they managed to assist at least two injured passengers and ensured they were given initial medical attention. Fortunately, no fatalities or critically injured victims were reported, which officials described as a relief given the severity of the crash.

Police from Debiganj Upazila police station, led by the Officer-in-Charge, stated that the bus had overturned following a loss of control, but most passengers had already left the scene before authorities arrived. Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are expected to continue.

The crash temporarily disrupted traffic movement in the area, creating congestion along the regional road. Law enforcement and local administrative teams later worked together to remove the overturned bus and restore normal traffic flow.

The incident once again highlights persistent challenges in road safety management in Bangladesh, particularly on regional highways where enforcement and monitoring remain inconsistent.
