Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have come under sharp criticism after their marquee signing, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, did not bowl in the franchise’s opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Bought for a record ₹25.20 crore, Green is the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. Yet, his bowling omission has sparked widespread debate, especially after KKR’s defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI).
Playing as the visiting side at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, KKR amassed a formidable total of 220 runs. However, their total fell short as Mumbai chased it down with six wickets in hand, five balls to spare. The match exposed KKR’s lack of pace-bowling depth, a gap further highlighted by Green not being utilised in the bowling attack.
Green has been returning from a long injury layoff. Cricket Australia (CA) has imposed restrictions on his bowling as a precaution. During the recent Ashes series, Green bowled sparingly, and in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he delivered only a handful of overs. Ahead of the IPL, it was widely speculated that Australia would limit his bowling in the tournament.
A CA spokesperson clarified: “Cameron has recovered from his back injury, but he requires approximately 10–12 more days to resume full bowling responsibilities in India. KKR has been informed and is fully aware of his current status.”
KKR batsman Ajinkya Rahane also commented on Green’s bowling situation after the Mumbai match: “When Green begins bowling, it will change our team combinations. Right now, we need to evaluate who can deliver with the ball. We did well with the bat, but bowling balance is equally important. We hope he starts bowling soon, which will help solidify the team structure.” When asked why Green did not bowl, Rahane referred questions to Cricket Australia.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu criticised CA’s cautious approach. Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, he said: “It is illogical to dictate what a player can or cannot do. If a player is fit to compete professionally, they should be allowed to perform fully. The player should be the judge of their capabilities.”
Adding to the debate, former India spinner Piyush Chawla asked: “If an all-rounder in the Big Bash League cannot bat or bowl in certain matches, would they be selected in the playing XI? Unlikely. So why is the same restriction applied here? Decisions should be left to the professional cricketer.”
