Violent clashes over leadership appointments to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Noakhali Sadar erupted on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least ten political activists injured. Confrontations broke out between two opposing factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) student wing across Ashwadia Union, turning busy thoroughfares into chaotic battlegrounds and bringing regional traffic to a complete standstill.
The violence flared around 4:00 pm on Saturday, 29 August, spreading rapidly from Didimoni Bazaar to the square in front of the Ashwadia Union Parishad complex. Rival groups, brandishing native weapons, iron rods, and wooden staves, engaged in intermittent skirmishes for nearly three hours until 7:00 pm. Panic swept through nearby market stalls and residential quarters as rival supporters traded blows and chased each other through crowded public spaces. The prolonged disturbance halted vehicular movement along the critical Sonapur-Basurhat road, stranding commuters and causing a severe traffic gridlock that lasted over an hour.
Underlying tensions had been brewing within the local political apparatus for several days following the official declaration of a newly formed executive committee for the Ashwadia Union JCD unit. Deprived activists and prospective leaders who failed to secure portfolio positions accused senior party coordinators of nepotism, financial irregularities, and flawed selection procedures. Dissatisfaction turned into open confrontation when activists from both factions crossed paths near Didimoni Bazaar on Saturday afternoon. A heated verbal argument regarding the legitimacy of the new committee quickly spiralled out of control, precipitating a full-scale physical brawl.
At least ten people sustained varied injuries in the ensuing melee, suffering deep lacerations and severe blunt-force trauma from flying bricks and wooden clubs. Local shopkeepers and bystanders rushed to the scene to assist the wounded, arranging immediate emergency transportation to Noakhali General Hospital and various surrounding private clinics.
Structural protocol within student political bodies in Bangladesh involves regularly reconstituting union, upazila, and district-level committees to maintain organizational discipline and mobilising grassroots networks. However, these executive posts are highly prized across the political spectrum. Securing a committee seat provides significant local influence and serves as a vital stepping stone toward mainstream leadership roles within parent political entities like the BNP. Consequently, new committee announcements regularly spark intense internal feuds, with sidelined factions resorting to street demonstrations, blockades, or physical intimidation to challenge decision-makers.
Law enforcement agencies moved swiftly to restore order after receiving emergency calls from distressed residents. Armed police squads from the local department arrived at the scene, dispersed the fighting groups, and cleared barricades from the Sonapur-Basurhat highway to allow traffic to resume.
Addressing the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md. Liakat Akbar confirmed that timely police intervention brought the violence under control. He reported that while normal movement has resumed across Ashwadia Union, armed police detachments remain stationed at strategic intersections throughout the area to deter retaliatory attacks and prevent any resurgence of factional hostilities.
