A 32-year-old man from Companyganj, Sylhet, has reportedly been killed by gunfire inside India after being missing for three days. However, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has stated that no formal complaint has yet been lodged by the deceased’s family, and the matter is being relayed to the Border Security Force (BSF) of India for verification.
Victim and Family Details
The missing man has been identified as Saddam Hossain, son of Kutu Mia, residing in Lamagram, Uttar Ranikai Union, Companyganj. According to multiple family members, Saddam crossed the border into India on 1 April 2026 with three companions and did not return. Among them, one companion returned to Bangladesh injured by gunfire. This individual, Saddam’s friend Abu Bakkar, informed the family of the incident on Friday evening.
Saddam’s elder brother, Nizam Uddin, explained that Saddam left home without taking his mobile phone, prompting the family initially to believe he had visited relatives. Later, they learned that he had crossed into India with others. Nizam claimed, “I have heard that my brother was shot in the waist and leg and died at the scene.”
Attempts to reach the site with Abu Bakkar were unsuccessful due to the presence of BSF personnel. On Saturday afternoon, Nizam filed a written complaint at Companyganj Police Station reporting Saddam as missing. Police advised him to notify the local BGB camp as well.
Official Reactions
OC Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan of Companyganj Police confirmed that news has emerged of a Bangladeshi being shot dead across the border, and the matter is being investigated in collaboration with BGB.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Najmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet BGB-48 Battalion, said the incident came to light through local residents. He added, “We have asked the BSF whether any body was found along their border area, but they have not reported such information.”
He also stated that BGB has increased border surveillance and is raising awareness among locals to avoid illegal border crossings.
