A 47-year-old gold trader has died after reportedly leaping beneath a moving train in Faridpur’s Boalmari upazila, in what appears to be a deeply distressing incident linked to personal and financial hardship.
The deceased, Bikash Karmakar, was a resident of Boro Nagar village under Satir Union and the son of the late Nitai Karmakar. He had long been known in the locality as a jewellery craftsman and small ব্যবসায়ী at Satir বাজার. Once regarded as an established figure in his trade, his fortunes had reportedly declined in recent years.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on Sunday along the Kalukhali–Bhatiapara railway line, near Satir Railway Station. According to eyewitness accounts, Mr Karmakar had been standing beside the track as the রাজশাহী-গোপালগঞ্জগামী “Tungipara Express” approached. While bystanders moved to a safe distance upon hearing the train, he suddenly stepped forward and threw himself under it.
Local residents described the घटना as shocking and deeply unsettling. Several witnesses stated that there had been no immediate altercation or ঘটনা at the scene prior to the moment he moved towards the train, suggesting a sudden and deliberate act.
Further information gathered from স্থানীয় সূত্র indicates that Mr Karmakar had endured significant personal difficulties over the past few years. His স্ত্রী, Lakshmi Rani Karmakar, passed away around পাঁচ years ago, leaving him emotionally vulnerable. Their only son is currently living with maternal relatives. পরিবারিক বিচ্ছিন্নতা and দীর্ঘদিনের আর্থিক চাপ reportedly contributed to his deteriorating mental state.
It is understood that after facing mounting debt, he was compelled to close his ব্যবসা and later took up employment in Dhaka. Recently, he had returned to his গ্রামের বাড়ি with the intention of selling ancestral land. However, this পরিকল্পনা was opposed by family members, which may have further exacerbated his distress.
Police from Rajbari Railway Station responded promptly after receiving খবর of the incident. Officer-in-Charge মো. মিজানুর রহমান confirmed that the body was recovered from the scene and necessary legal procedures were completed before handing it over to the family.
