Shakib Hints at Political Comeback

Bangladesh’s celebrated all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has offered a clear indication that he has not ruled out a return to politics, while emphasising that his immediate priority remains cricket and securing his return to the country.

In a candid interview with a leading English-language daily, the former national captain spoke openly about balancing his sporting career with his political ambitions. Shakib, who previously served as a Member of Parliament, said he has not withdrawn from politics entirely, but circumstances have temporarily shifted his focus.

Addressing speculation over his political future, he noted that his affiliated party’s activities are currently inactive, which has led him to concentrate on his cricketing commitments. However, he stressed that once normal political operations resume, he would consider re-engaging in political work.

He explained that politics, in his view, is a lifelong arena, whereas cricket is time-bound and demands immediate attention. He added that he is prioritising his sporting career at this stage, but his interest in contributing to public life remains intact. According to him, politics provides a significant platform through which meaningful societal change can be achieved, and he continues to hold onto the aspiration of serving people in the future.

Shakib also reflected on the broader political environment, expressing optimism that conditions in the country would eventually stabilise. He stated his hope that a more balanced democratic environment would emerge, allowing all political parties equal opportunity and enabling citizens to make decisions freely.

The cricketer has been living outside Bangladesh for nearly two years and has not returned since the political transition in August 2024, when the previous government was ousted amid mass protests. Legal complications have since been cited as one of the key obstacles preventing his return.

Recent comments from political figure Aminul Haque suggested that Shakib would be welcomed back if ongoing legal issues are resolved, signalling a possible pathway for his return.

On his current situation, Shakib reiterated his optimism, stating that he has always been a hopeful person. He confirmed that legal procedures are underway and expressed a desire to resolve outstanding matters as quickly as possible.
