Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has openly expressed frustration over his continued absence from the national side, despite consistent appearances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). His remarks came after a commanding performance for Lucknow Super Giants against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he played a decisive role with the ball.
In Sunday’s fixture, Shami delivered a disciplined spell, conceding just nine runs in four overs while claiming two crucial wickets. His scalps included aggressive openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, both known for their explosive starts in the powerplay. The performance once again highlighted his ability to extract control and movement even against high-tempo batting line-ups.
Following the match, Shami did not directly name individuals, but his comments were widely interpreted as a pointed reflection on selectors and team management. He stressed that he is not a machine capable of delivering identical performances in every game, and suggested that expectations of unwavering consistency fail to reflect the realities of professional sport.
He further stated that if his performances sometimes go unnoticed, it is beyond his control. The seasoned pacer underlined that selection decisions lie elsewhere, while his responsibility remains to stay fit, available, and competitive.
Shami also reflected on his return from injury, acknowledging that last IPL season did not go as planned. In that campaign, he featured in nine matches and managed only six wickets, struggling to maintain rhythm and control. However, he insisted that he has since regained form through continuous participation in domestic cricket, which he considers essential for maintaining match fitness and sharpness.
The fast bowler praised the environment at Lucknow, noting his strong working relationship with bowling coach Bharat Arun. Having previously worked together at the national level, Shami said the mutual understanding has helped him refine his approach and settle quickly into the team structure. He also described Lucknow as a “second home,” reflecting his comfort within the franchise setup.
Shami concluded by reiterating that his focus remains firmly on performance and preparation rather than selection debates. He emphasised his commitment to improving both with the new ball and old ball, adding that his primary objective is always to contribute effectively to the team’s success, regardless of external discussions surrounding his future at the international level.

Shami’s latest outing has reignited discussions around his form and potential recall, as he continues to make a strong case through performances rather than words.
