A fire erupted on an electrical utility pole adjacent to the high-rise Janata Tower in Dhaka’s bustling Kawran Bazar late on Friday night, sparking momentary panic across the commercial hub. Emergency responders contained the outbreak within twenty minutes, ensuring no casualties or injuries were sustained.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence control room logged the emergency call at 11:35 pm. Duty officer Rafi Al Faruq reported that two firefighting units from Tejgaon Fire Station were deployed to the scene immediately. Arriving rapidly due to their close proximity, firefighters managed live electrical risks and extinguished the blaze before it could spread across the surrounding overhead cable network or threaten nearby structures.
Kawran Bazar serves as a central commercial and media district in Bangladesh, operating as a round-the-clock centre for commerce. The area hosts corporate offices, technology facilities such as Janata Tower, television networks, print media houses, and the city’s primary wholesale commodity market. Given the structural density and heavy footfall characteristic of the area, localized fires present severe risks of rapid propagation. Prompt intervention by emergency personnel prevented the incident from escalating into a broader urban crisis.
The incident highlights continuing safety concerns regarding overhead cable infrastructure in Dhaka. Overhead distribution networks across the capital remain heavily burdened with intertwined electrical lines, telecommunication linkages, and internet cabling. These dense networks are vulnerable to electrical short circuits, particularly during supply fluctuations. Although municipal agencies have undertaken long-term programmes to relocate utility cables underground, execution within congested commercial corridors remains complex. As a result, localized electrical failures frequently cause surface fires that pose hazards to pedestrians, commuters, and neighboring property.
Following the containment of the fire, utility technicians initiated inspections of the damaged wiring and power apparatus to evaluate grid safety and restore electricity service. Preliminary observations suggest an electrical short circuit within the primary distribution lines, though formal technical evaluations are ongoing to determine the precise cause. Authorities have not yet issued an estimate of the material damage to the electrical fixtures. Traffic movement and commercial operations in the vicinity returned to normal shortly after firefighters cleared the scene.
