German football legend Lothar Matthäus has sparked fresh controversy ahead of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, criticising the conduct of Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior.
Matthäus, 65, who captained Germany to the 1990 FIFA World Cup and won the Ballon d’Or the same year, played two spells with Bayern Munich, amassing six Bundesliga titles. Known for his candid opinions, the former midfielder claimed Vinícius frequently provokes opponents and reacts dramatically to challenges during matches.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Matthäus remarked, “Vinícius is an exceptional footballer, but he consistently incites opponents. The moment he is properly tackled, he begins to complain and often ends up in tears.”
The former Germany captain also raised concerns about Real Madrid’s attitude off the pitch. He criticised the club for snubbing the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony after Rodri was named the world’s best player. Matthäus argued, “Choosing Rodri was the correct decision, yet Real Madrid refused to attend, claiming it was unfair. This is disrespectful. Clubs and players must show respect to their peers and opponents.”
Matthäus has previously expressed disappointment over Vinícius’ behaviour, particularly following the Brazilian’s FIFA Best Men’s Player award in December 2024. Comparing him with Neymar, Matthäus told Bild: “Vinícius reminds me of Neymar – phenomenal talent but a volatile temperament. He provokes the crowd, engages in disputes with opponents, and uses gestures that can incite confrontation. His technical skills are world-class, but his attitude is flawed. Neymar set the wrong example for him.”
Tonight, at Santiago Bernabéu, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will face off in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, kicking off at 1:00 a.m. Bangladesh time. With both sides featuring explosive attacking talent, Matthäus’ comments have added a psychological dimension to this eagerly awaited encounter.
