A devastating incident in Bangladesh’s Habiganj district has claimed the lives of a young brother and sister after they drowned in a pond near their home, plunging the local community into profound grief.
The tragic event occurred on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:30 pm in the Maijer Moholla area of the South-East Union No. 3 under Baniachong Upazila. According to local authorities, the victims—six-year-old Sadiya Akter and her four-year-old brother Jubayer Mia—were the children of Liton Mia, a resident of the neighbourhood.
Police confirmed the details of the incident, stating that the children had been playing near a pond adjacent to their residence. At some point during their play, they accidentally fell into the water. Due to their young age and inability to swim, they quickly became submerged.
Local residents reportedly noticed the incident shortly afterwards and rushed to the scene. The children were pulled from the water and immediately taken to the Baniachong Upazila Health Complex in an attempt to save their lives. However, the attending medical officer declared both children dead upon arrival.
The sudden loss of two young siblings has left the entire locality in shock. Neighbours gathered at the grieving family’s home, offering condolences as the parents and relatives struggled to come to terms with the unimaginable tragedy. The atmosphere in the area has been described as one of deep mourning, with many residents expressing sorrow over the preventable nature of the incident.
Authorities have reiterated concerns about water safety in rural areas, where ponds are commonly located near homes and often lack protective barriers. Such incidents remain a recurring risk, particularly for young children who frequently play outdoors without constant supervision.
