Two separate rail accidents in Charghat upazila of Rajshahi district have resulted in the deaths of a woman and a young man within a span of less than twenty-four hours, raising renewed concerns over railway safety and public awareness near active tracks.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday morning at approximately 8:45 a.m. near the Halidagachi Rail Gate in the Sholua Union. According to eyewitness accounts and local sources, a train travelling from Rajshahi to Khulna reportedly struck a woman believed to be around 35 years of age. The incident took place as the Mahananda Express approached the area. Witnesses stated that the woman suddenly moved onto the tracks and was hit instantly, suffering catastrophic injuries. Despite immediate efforts by locals to identify her, her identity could not be confirmed at the scene. Preliminary observations by residents suggest that the case may have been a suicide, although authorities have not officially confirmed this.
The second fatality took place on Monday night in the Habibpur Kalabipara area under the Nimpara Union of the same upazila. A 25-year-old man named Sohag, son of Julum Pramanik, was killed after being struck by a train. Local residents reported that he was under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to his inability to notice or react to the approaching train. The impact of the collision resulted in the severing of one of his legs, and he died at the scene.
Railway officials indicated that both incidents appear to have been caused primarily by negligence and risky behaviour near railway tracks. Authorities at Sarada Station suggested that while the woman’s death may point towards suspected suicide, intoxication and lack of awareness were likely contributing factors in the case of the young man.
The Ishwardi Railway Police confirmed that legal procedures have been initiated in both cases. The body of the unidentified woman has been recovered and is being prepared for post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, Sohag’s body was handed over to his family following formal procedures, and he was later buried in the presence of relatives and local residents.
