Police have arrested Mujibur Rahman Mujib, general secretary of the Awami League’s North Fenchuganj Union unit, in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act in Sylhet’s Fenchuganj.
Mujib was arrested at his home in the Manikona area of Fenchuganj on Sunday evening, 23 August, during a police operation, according to law enforcement officials.
Mujibur Rahman Mujib serves as the general secretary of the Awami League’s 5th North Fenchuganj Union unit. Police said he is named as an accused in a case involving allegations of planning acts of sabotage. The arrest was made as part of the ongoing investigation and a wider effort to locate and apprehend other individuals named in the case.
According to police, officers conducted an operation at Mujib’s residence in Manikona on Sunday evening. He was taken into custody from the house and subsequently brought to Fenchuganj Police Station. Police then began the necessary legal procedures and reviewed the relevant case documents.
Fenchuganj Police Station Sub-Inspector A. M. M. Ashraful Haque said Mujib had been arrested from his own residence. He added that, after the completion of the required legal procedures, the accused would be produced before a court and sent to jail in accordance with the court’s decision.
Police, however, have not provided detailed information about the precise nature of the alleged sabotage plan attributed to Mujib. No specific incident connected to the allegation against him was disclosed immediately after the arrest.
There was also no information from police about whether any weapons, explosives or other materials were recovered from Mujib’s residence during the operation. Officials have not publicly described any such recovery in connection with the arrest.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing, police said. The allegations and relevant case documents are expected to be presented before the court as part of the legal process. Further action will depend on the proceedings and directions of the court.
An arrest or the filing of a case does not, by itself, establish a person’s guilt. The allegations against Mujibur Rahman Mujib will have to be examined through the judicial process, with the facts and evidence assessed in accordance with the law.
