In spite of inclement weather and heavy rainfall, a vast number of people gathered to attend the funeral of Abdul Kuddus Moaz, a prominent figure within the Sherpur district unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). The funeral prayers (Janaza) were held on Wednesday, 6 May, following the Asr prayer at the Mirganj Barakpara Eidgah field in Sherpur.
The congregation was attended by a broad spectrum of society, including district and sub-district level BCL activists, representatives from various political organisations, local government officials, and a significant number of the general public. Local residents and colleagues used the occasion to reflect on Moaz’s organisational capabilities and his long-standing involvement in student politics, describing him as a dedicated and courageous organiser. Following the service, he was interred at a local cemetery.
Sudden Fatality Following Period of Incarceration
The death of Abdul Kuddus Moaz occurred under unexpected circumstances shortly after his release from legal custody. Moaz, the son of Faju Mia—a fish trader from the Mirganj area of Sherpur—had been incarcerated for a period exceeding seven months. He secured bail through a formal legal process and returned to his home in Sherpur only seven days prior to his passing.
On Tuesday, Moaz travelled to the capital, Dhaka, and stayed at a residence in the Lalbagh area. According to family sources, he had not exhibited any significant physical complications prior to this journey. However, at approximately 06:30 am on Wednesday, 6 May, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He was immediately transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Political Background and Legal Record
Abdul Kuddus Moaz was a notable figure in the student political landscape of Sherpur. He served as the General Secretary of the Sherpur Government College unit of the Chhatra League and was also a member of the Sherpur District BCL committee. Academically, he had completed his Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours in Zoology from Sherpur Government College.
His political career was marked by significant controversy during the political transitions of 2024. Following the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement—which led to the fall of the previous administration—Moaz was identified as a charge-sheeted accused in a murder case involving the deaths of students in Sherpur town during the protests.
The timeline of his arrest and subsequent legal challenges is documented as follows:
Post-Uprising Transition: Following the mass movement in 2024, Moaz reportedly went into hiding to avoid legal repercussions.
Apprehension: On 24 September 2025, he was located in the Kalabagan area of Dhaka. He was detained by a group of citizens and subsequently handed over to the Bangladesh Army, who later transferred him to Dhanmondi Police Station.
Detention: He remained in prison for nearly seven months while facing charges related to the 2024 unrest.
Release: He was released on bail in late April 2026, exactly one week before his fatal cardiac event.
Community Response and Condolences
The passing of the Sherpur student leader has left a void among his supporters. Despite the BCL being declared a “prohibited” organisation by the interim authorities following the 2024 uprising, the sheer volume of attendees at the Barakpara Eidgah field suggested a high level of local personal following.
During the funeral, attendees offered prayers for the salvation of his soul and expressed their sympathies to the bereaved family. Moaz’s sudden death, coming so soon after regaining his freedom, has been a subject of significant discussion within Sherpur. His family, led by his father Faju Mia, accepted the condolences of the local community as they laid the student leader to rest. The local administration ensured that the large gathering remained orderly, given the high-profile nature of the deceased and the underlying political sensitivities surrounding his legal history.
