The fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States is reportedly under severe strain, with US President Donald Trump stating that the situation has reached a critical stage. According to Mr Trump, Tehran’s counter-proposals to ongoing peace discussions are “unacceptable”, and the ceasefire agreement is now, in his words, “on life support”.
As part of the peace negotiations, Iran has put forward a series of stringent conditions. These include demands for compensation for wartime damages, a complete lifting of the US naval blockade, and formal recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. President Trump has categorically rejected these demands, describing them as “rubbish”. He further stated that Iran’s firm stance is jeopardising the temporary truce that has been in place since 7 April.
The political tensions have also begun to affect global energy markets. Disruptions in oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to a sharp increase in crude oil prices, which have reportedly exceeded USD 104 per barrel on international markets. This represents one of the highest price levels recorded in recent years.
In response to the escalating situation, the United States has introduced additional sanctions. These measures target individuals and entities accused of facilitating the illicit transfer of Iranian oil to China, further tightening economic pressure on Tehran.
Iran, meanwhile, maintains that its demands are legitimate and has stated that its armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any form of aggression. The Trump administration, on the other hand, has indicated that failure to reach an agreement could lead to the reimposition of more stringent military or economic measures.
