In the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Messi led Argentina to end a 36-year wait for the title. The team secured their third World Cup triumph under head coach Lionel Scaloni, who has since established himself as a highly respected manager. Under his leadership, Argentina are preparing for the upcoming World Cup to be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
With less than a month remaining before the tournament begins, Scaloni spoke to CONMEBOL on Friday about Argentina’s prospects. He stated that winning another World Cup would be extremely difficult, though not impossible. He also discussed squad preparation and the future of captain Lionel Messi.
Scaloni has already submitted a preliminary squad list of 55 players. From this group, he will select a final 26-man squad in the coming days ahead of the tournament.
Squad Preparation Overview
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Preliminary squad | 55 players |
| Final squad | 26 players (to be selected) |
| Tournament | FIFA World Cup (USA, Canada, Mexico) |
| Argentina status | Reigning world champions |
Reflecting on the demands of the competition, Scaloni stated: “The World Cup is very difficult. It is not enough to simply play well; many small details must be managed properly. As always, we will try again [to win the trophy]. Argentina always aims to reach the top when it participates in the World Cup. It is very difficult, but not impossible.”
Attention has also centred on Messi, who is expected to be participating in what is widely regarded as his final World Cup. However, Scaloni declined to make predictions regarding the forward’s future. He said: “Being able to watch him play is a wonderful thing. Whether this is his last World Cup or not, everyone wants to see him play. I prefer to think that he will continue playing. Thinking otherwise causes sadness, as happened with Diego [Maradona].”
He further added: “The idea that he will no longer play creates a sense of unease. Therefore, I prefer to focus on the present.”
Since taking charge, Scaloni has guided Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles. His appointment was initially met with scepticism due to his relatively low profile and limited managerial experience. However, subsequent tournament success has firmly established his reputation.
Explaining his coaching approach, Scaloni emphasised simplicity and clarity in communication with players. He stated that the team avoids overwhelming players with excessive information, focusing only on what is essential for performance on the pitch. He also highlighted that his experience as a former player helps him understand the needs of the squad.
Argentina have been drawn in Group J for the upcoming World Cup, alongside Austria, Algeria and Jordan. Their opening match is scheduled for 16 June against Algeria, marking the start of their campaign as defending champions.
