The Government of Bangladesh has established a high-level committee to investigate allegations of systemic corruption and financial irregularities within the Local Government Division (LGD). These allegations span the tenures of both the former Awami League administration and the subsequent interim government. The announcement was made by the State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD), and Co-operatives, Mir Shah Alam, during a press briefing at the Secretariat on Saturday, 23 May 2026.
Investigating Procedural and Financial Lapses
A primary focus of the briefing involved specific allegations against Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, a former advisor. State Minister Mir Shah Alam asserted that Mr Bhuyain had approved a project file without the mandatory signature of the Secretary, representing a significant breach of established administrative protocols.
Beyond individual procedural lapses, the State Minister highlighted a staggering case of financial embezzlement in Pirojpur. According to the Minister, approximately Tk 6,000 crore was withdrawn following a tender process for a specific project; however, no physical work was executed on the ground. This misappropriation has resulted in a complete cessation of various development initiatives in the district over the past two years.
Formation of the Seven-Member Committee
To address these grievances, the government has mandated a seven-member investigation committee. The Director General of the Local Government Division has been appointed as the convenor. The committee is tasked with reviewing the activities of the LGD and its subordinate offices and agencies from 2009 to 2026.

Commitment to Infrastructure Restoration
State Minister Mir Shah Alam further noted that irregularities and corruption have compromised numerous road and bridge construction projects across various districts. He expressed his intention to visit Pirojpur shortly to assess the situation firsthand and initiate measures to resume the suspended development projects. The investigation committee has been directed to submit its comprehensive findings within 60 working days, which will serve as the basis for subsequent legal and administrative actions.
