Bangladesh is observing the holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi on the 12th of Rabiul Awal, marking both the birth and passing of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH). Born in 570 AD into the noble Quraish tribe of Mecca, the Prophet entered the world as an orphan following the death of his father, Abdullah, and lost his mother, Amina, when he was just six years old. After spending his life conveying the divine message and laying the foundations of Islamic ethics, he passed away on the exact same date in 632 AD at the age of 63. Believers across the nation and around the world commemorate this sacred day as Eid-e-Miladunnabi or Seeratunnabi, reflecting on his legacy of peace, compassion, and justice.
Devout Muslims are spending the day absorbed in voluntary worship, reciting verses from the Holy Qur’an, chanting Darood Sharif, observing non-obligatory fasts, and distributing charitable aid to the destitute. The occasion is observed as an official public holiday across Bangladesh. In honour of the day, the national flag flies atop all government buildings, semi-government entities, autonomous institutions, and military establishments. Key thoroughfares, roundabouts, and major traffic islands throughout Dhaka have been decorated with the national flag alongside banners bearing the Kalima Tayyiba.
National leaders released commemorative statements extending warm greetings to citizens and Muslims worldwide. President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the populace to discard malice, division, and injustice, calling for the establishment of an equitable society grounded in harmony and human dignity. Prime Minister Tariq Rahman highlighted that embedding the Prophet’s principles into personal, domestic, and public governance remains essential for building a just and welfare-minded state. He noted that the advent of the Prophet represented a transformative moment in human history, illuminating a path towards truth. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi added that the Prophet’s birth ushered in an era of boundless divine grace for humanity.
To observe the fortnight-long occasion, the Islamic Foundation has arranged a series of spiritual and cultural events at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The formal observances commenced on Tuesday evening following the Maghrib prayer at the mosque’s eastern courtyard. President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir inaugurated the festivities as the chief guest during an opening ceremony presided over by Minister for Religious Affairs Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, with Mohammad Shamim Kaisar Linkon attending as a special guest.
Religious lectures (Waz Mahfils) led by prominent Islamic scholars are scheduled daily after Maghrib prayers at the national mosque until 8 September. The comprehensive itinerary features Qur’an recitation assemblies (Qirat Mahfils), devotional music recitals (Hamd-Naat), seminars organised in collaboration with Bangladesh Betar, poetry recitations, and Islamic cultural competitions designed for school, college, university, and madrasa students. A month-long Islamic book fair and calligraphy showcase have also opened across the eastern and southern plazas of Baitul Mukarram, alongside the publication of a commemorative Seerat souvenir.
