Young Man Found Dead in Police Cell

A 22-year-old man was found hanging inside a police detention cell in Kishoreganj after being arrested under a case filed by his own father, prompting an official investigation into the incident.

The deceased, Rubel Mia, was an only son from Shaharmul area under Karapasha Union in Nikli upazila. Police recovered his body from the detention facility at Nikli Police Station at around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday (9 July).

According to police, Rubel had been arrested earlier that morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. following an arrest warrant issued by a court in connection with a case lodged by his father. After being taken into custody, he was placed in the station’s holding cell while officers prepared to produce him before the court.

Officials said that when police later went to escort him for the scheduled court appearance, they discovered him hanging inside the cell. Initial findings suggest that he used his own shirt to fashion a ligature, tying it to the cell’s iron grille. Officers immediately recovered him, but he had already died.

Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the incident, stating that legal procedures had been initiated and that the circumstances surrounding the death were under investigation. He added that Rubel had struggled with drug addiction for a prolonged period and that the arrest had been carried out in accordance with a valid court warrant.

The incident has drawn particular attention because the case leading to Rubel’s arrest had been filed by his father, Raja Howlader. Speaking after learning of his son’s death, the grieving father described the painful decision he had been forced to make.

“My son was my only child and he was dearly loved,” he said. “Unfortunately, he became addicted to drugs at a young age. I tried everything to help him recover, but his condition continued to deteriorate. Eventually, I had no choice but to file a case against him.”

Raja Howlader explained that Rubel had previously served three months in prison but failed to overcome his addiction after his release. According to him, the young man returned to drug use and frequently behaved aggressively towards family members, leaving them with few options.

He also recounted the events of Thursday morning. After informing police of his son’s whereabouts, officers arrested Rubel and took him to Nikli Police Station. The father later visited the station, bringing food and fresh clothes for him before returning home. While on his way back, he received the devastating news that his son had allegedly taken his own life inside the holding cell.

Deaths in police custody are treated as serious incidents under Bangladesh’s legal procedures and are subject to investigation to determine the exact circumstances. Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the case, and the inquiry is expected to establish the sequence of events leading to Rubel’s death.

The incident has shocked local residents and once again raised concerns about the welfare and supervision of detainees held in police custody. Officials, however, have urged the public to await the outcome of the investigation before drawing conclusions about the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
