Chelsea forward João Pedro has made an immediate mark on the new Premier League season, scoring after just 31 seconds against Fulham to set a new record for the fastest goal in an opening round of the competition.
The Brazilian striker needed less than a minute to make history at Craven Cottage on Monday night. Chelsea launched an early attack and Cole Palmer played a perfectly weighted through ball into Pedro’s path. The forward showed excellent composure to take the pass into the penalty area before lifting the ball over the advancing Fulham goalkeeper and into the net.
The finish was both quick and technically assured. Pedro had little time to assess the situation, yet he recognised the goalkeeper’s position and opted for a delicate chip rather than attempting to force the ball past him. The decision paid off almost instantly.
Statistics provider Opta confirmed that the ball crossed the line in the 31st second. That figure gave Pedro the distinction of scoring the fastest goal recorded in the first round of a Premier League season, putting him at the top of a record previously held by former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.
Lacazette had established the previous mark in Arsenal’s opening fixture of the 2017–18 campaign. Facing Leicester City, the Frenchman scored after 94 seconds, or one minute and 34 seconds. Pedro therefore improved the previous record by 63 seconds, a significant margin in a competition where even a few seconds can separate statistical milestones.
The goal also underlined the importance of the understanding between Pedro and Palmer in Chelsea’s early attacking move. Palmer’s pass split the defensive line, while Pedro’s movement allowed him to receive the ball in a dangerous position before finishing with precision.
For Chelsea, an early goal can provide more than simply a numerical advantage. It immediately puts pressure on the opposition and can alter the rhythm of a match, particularly in the opening fixture of a new campaign when teams are still establishing their shape and rhythm.
For Pedro, meanwhile, the record provides a striking beginning to his campaign. Scoring in the opening minute is rare enough; doing so in the first round of the Premier League and simultaneously breaking a long-standing record makes the moment even more notable.
The 31-second strike has now placed João Pedro ahead of Lacazette in the competition’s opening-round record books. More importantly for Chelsea, it offered an emphatic reminder of the Brazilian’s ability to react quickly, exploit space and finish decisively under pressure.
With the season only beginning, Pedro could hardly have asked for a more memorable introduction.
