Switzerland have suffered a significant setback ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against defending champions Argentina, with influential attacking midfielder Johan Manzambi ruled out through injury.
Head coach Murat Yakin confirmed during his pre-match press conference that the 20-year-old has not fully recovered from a knee injury and will therefore miss one of Switzerland’s biggest matches in decades. Manzambi was also unavailable for the Round of 16 victory over Colombia for the same reason.
Yakin acknowledged that the absence of one of his side’s standout performers would be a major blow as Switzerland prepare to face one of the tournament favourites.
“Unfortunately, Johan’s injury is a huge disappointment for us,” Yakin said. “He was in excellent form, and his presence always had a positive influence on the team. His contribution throughout the tournament has been extremely important, but sadly he won’t be available for this match.”
Manzambi has been one of the revelations of Switzerland’s World Cup campaign. Despite playing only 200 minutes during the group stage, he scored three goals and provided two assists, emerging as the team’s most effective attacking player. His brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina proved instrumental in helping Switzerland progress comfortably into the knockout rounds.
Without him, however, Switzerland found life considerably more difficult in the last-16 encounter against Colombia. The Swiss were unable to break the deadlock over 120 minutes and eventually secured their place in the quarter-finals after prevailing in a tense penalty shoot-out.
The challenge now becomes even greater against an Argentina side aiming to defend its World Cup crown. History also offers little encouragement for the Swiss. They have failed to win any of their seven previous meetings with Argentina.
The most memorable encounter came during the Round of 16 at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, when Ángel Di María scored the decisive goal in extra time to hand Argentina a narrow 1-0 victory after a fiercely contested match.
Current Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka and experienced defender Ricardo Rodríguez both featured in that defeat and remain key members of the national squad. Reflecting on the upcoming reunion with Argentina, Xhaka said he and Rodríguez are proud to represent their country once again on football’s biggest stage.
“Twelve years later, Ricky and I are back here again,” Xhaka remarked. “But this is a completely different Switzerland. Our mentality has changed, a new generation has emerged, and Swiss football has developed significantly over the years.”
Switzerland’s appearance in the quarter-finals marks a notable achievement. In four of the previous five World Cups, they were eliminated in the Round of 16. This year’s run represents their first place in the last eight since the 1954 tournament.
Victory over Argentina would take Switzerland into the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in the nation’s history. While the absence of Manzambi undoubtedly weakens their attacking options, Yakin’s side will hope that their resilience, organisation and growing confidence can compensate against one of international football’s strongest teams.
With a historic semi-final place at stake, the quarter-final promises to be one of the most compelling fixtures of the tournament.
