Police Block Student March at Education Building

A group of protesting students was stopped by police outside the Education Building in the capital after marching towards the Ministry of Education to demand the resignation of Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon.

The demonstration formed part of a protest programme organised by students seeking the minister’s resignation. According to footage shared on multiple platforms, the march began from the University of Dhaka campus and reached the area in front of the Education Building at around 4:00 pm. By the time the protesters arrived, police had already established barricades across the road, preventing them from advancing towards the ministry.

Videos from the scene showed a significant police presence around the Education Building, with officers positioned behind metal barricades to restrict access to the government premises. The students gathered in front of the barricades, where they continued their protest and chanted slogans in support of their demands. Although the demonstrators attempted to move closer to the ministry, the police prevented them from crossing the security cordon.

The march appeared to proceed in an organised manner from the university campus before being halted. No reports of major violence, vandalism or injuries had emerged at the time of the incident. The situation remained tense but under control, with both protesters and law enforcement maintaining their positions outside the restricted area.

The Education Building is one of the country’s key administrative centres for education-related affairs and is routinely placed under heightened security during demonstrations. Police frequently deploy additional personnel and temporary barricades around the premises whenever protest programmes are announced, citing the need to maintain public order and ensure the security of government offices.

Traffic in the surrounding area slowed temporarily as protesters gathered near the barricades, while security personnel monitored the situation closely. The students continued their sit-in outside the Education Building after being prevented from proceeding further, maintaining their demand for the Education Minister’s resignation.
