Dengue Claims One More Life, 473 Hospitalised

Bangladesh has recorded another death from dengue as the mosquito-borne disease continues to place pressure on the country’s healthcare system. Over the past 24 hours, one person has died from dengue-related complications, while 473 new patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country, according to the latest official figures.

The update was released on Sunday (19 July) in a dengue situation report issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The report shows that the highest number of new hospital admissions was recorded in Dhaka Division, including the two city corporations of the capital. A total of 165 patients were admitted in the division during the reporting period, with 81 of them receiving treatment in hospitals within Dhaka metropolitan area.

Outside the capital, Barishal Division reported the highest number of new admissions, with 75 patients hospitalised. Khulna Division followed with 66 cases, while Chattogram recorded 63 new admissions. Rangpur reported 42 cases, Mymensingh 36, Rajshahi 23 and Sylhet three.

The latest fatality involved a woman aged between 41 and 45 years who was undergoing treatment at a hospital under the Dhaka South City Corporation area. Her death has taken this year’s dengue death toll to 34.

According to the DGHS, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 10,485 confirmed dengue cases between 1 January and 19 July 2026. During the same period, 9,440 patients recovered after receiving treatment and were discharged from hospital.

Despite the growing number of recoveries, hospitals continue to treat a significant number of patients. At present, 1,011 dengue patients remain admitted to government and private healthcare facilities across the country.

Public health experts continue to urge people to eliminate potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, particularly by removing stagnant water from homes, rooftops, construction sites and surrounding areas. They also advise anyone experiencing symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headache, muscle pain, nausea or unusual bleeding to seek medical attention promptly, as early diagnosis and treatment remain critical in reducing the risk of serious complications.
