Kaliganj Man On The Run Following Attempted Sexual Assault

Police in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila have launched an extensive manhunt for a 70-year-old man accused of attempting to rape a mentally disabled young woman.

The suspect, identified as Lokman Hossain, son of the late Torab Ali, hails from Mohani village under the Baktarpur union. He went into hiding immediately after the incident took place on Wednesday morning.

According to the complaint lodged with the local police, the 20-year-old victim was walking along a village road on Wednesday, 22 July, when Lokman called her over to his property. As she approached, he forcibly grabbed her hands, touched her inappropriately, and bit her across various parts of her body. The perpetrator then threw her onto the veranda floor in an attempt to rape her. However, as the young woman screamed for help, Lokman panicked, fearing that neighbours would be alerted, and fled the scene.

Upon returning home, the victim recounted the ordeal to her mother, who discovered visible bite marks and physical injuries on her daughter’s body. The family immediately rushed her to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty physicians administered necessary medical treatment. Following her treatment, the victim’s mother lodged a formal written complaint with the Kaliganj Police Station.

Local residents revealed that this was not an isolated incident involving Lokman. Roughly two years ago, similar allegations of sexual misconduct were raised against him within the community. Locals voiced strong frustration over the lack of formal legal action during the previous episode, claiming that impunity enabled him to commit such a heinous crime once again.

Speaking on the matter on Thursday morning, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Md. Zakir Hossain, confirmed that a case (Case No. 29) has been formally registered under the relevant sections of the Nari O Shishu Nirjonaton Daman Ain, 2000 (Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act).

Law enforcement officers are actively pursuing all available leads to apprehend the fugitive. Police have reassured the victim’s family and the local community that thorough investigative protocols are being followed, and the perpetrator will be brought to justice swiftly.
