Awami League Leader Dies After Falling Ill in Sirajganj Jail

An Awami League leader died while undergoing treatment at Sirajganj 250-bed General Hospital after falling ill in Sirajganj District Jail, officials said.

The deceased was identified as Bablu Mia, 52, son of the late Ramzan Ali of Purba Bahuka village in Bahuka Union under Sirajganj Sadar Upazila. He served as the environment affairs secretary of Ratan Kandi Union Awami League.

Bablu died at the hospital on Thursday morning, 23 July, while receiving medical treatment. He had reportedly been taken there after becoming unwell while in custody at the district jail.

Sirajganj District Jail Superintendent Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the death. According to him, Bablu Mia had been sent to jail about a month earlier in connection with a political case and had remained in custody since then.

The jail authorities said Bablu fell ill on Wednesday evening. As his condition required medical attention, he was taken from the jail to Sirajganj 250-bed General Hospital for treatment. He subsequently died there on Thursday morning, despite receiving medical care.

The circumstances surrounding his illness and the precise medical cause of death were not immediately disclosed. No further details were available regarding whether he had been suffering from any pre-existing health condition or what treatment he received after being admitted to hospital.

Bablu’s death comes against the backdrop of continuing political tensions in Bangladesh, where political activists and leaders have faced legal cases and arrests in recent years.
