Two Inter-District Robbery Suspects Arrested in Keraniganj Raid

Two Inter-District Robbery Suspects Arrested in Keraniganj Raid

Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have apprehended two alleged members of an inter-district robbery gang while they were reportedly preparing to commit a heist in Keraniganj, Dhaka.

The operation, carried out by elite crime-fighters from RAB-10, led to the seizure of several sharp weapons and mobile devices from the suspects’ possession.

Midnight Operation at East Charail

Acting on precise intelligence, an operational team from RAB-10 launched a late-night raid on Wednesday in the East Charail Balur Math area, situated under the Kalindi Union of Keraniganj Model Police Station.

Officers surrounded the location shortly after midnight, surprising the suspects who had assembled in the secluded field to finalise their plans for an upcoming robbery. While law enforcement personnel managed to detain two individuals at the scene, several of their accomplices took advantage of the darkness and managed to flee.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Md. Parvez (31): Son of Bazlur Rahman, hailing from the Bapta municipal area in Bhola Sadar Upazila.

  • Md. Suman Hossain (22): Son of Ishaq Baburchi, residing in the Kalindi Union of Keraniganj, Dhaka.

During the search, officers recovered a collection of sharp weapons, including five meat cleavers (chapati), two knives, and a sword, alongside two mobile phones believed to have been used to coordinate criminal activities.

Suspects Belong to Inter-District Gang

Senior Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-10, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Tapan Sarkar, confirmed the details of the raid through an official press statement issued on Thursday afternoon.

Initial interrogations revealed that both Parvez and Suman are active operatives within a organized inter-district robbery ring. The syndicate has reportedly been operating across Keraniganj and several adjoining districts for an extended period, targeting residential homes, commercial enterprises, and highway commuters.

Official Statement: “Preliminary investigations confirm that the arrestees belong to an organized gang involved in robberies across multiple districts. A case regarding the preparation to commit robbery is being filed against them, and procedures are underway to hand them over to Keraniganj Model Police Station for further legal action.”

Broader Context: Security Challenges in Keraniganj

Located just across the Buriganga River from central Dhaka, Keraniganj serves as a major commercial and transit hub connecting the capital with the southern districts of Bangladesh. Its rapid industrialisation, sprawling wholesale markets, and extensive network of waterways have made it economically vital, yet uniquely vulnerable to crime.

Unplanned urban expansion and vast stretches of open land—such as the sandfields (balur math) often created through land filling—frequently become hotspots for local gangs and inter-district criminals.

Inter-district robbery syndicates operating around Dhaka often exploit the suburban fringe to plan attacks, hide weapons, and stage escapes to nearby districts via riverways or national highways. The recovery of heavy sharp weapons like swords and cleavers highlights the violent methods these groups use to intimidate victims.

In response to a rise in suburban crime, RAB and local police units have intensified night patrols, intelligence gathering, and targeted raids in vulnerable sectors. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting follow-up operations to track down the fleeing accomplices identified during the preliminary investigation.
