Elderly Woman Found Dead in Abandoned Septic Tank After Three Hours

An elderly woman was found dead inside an abandoned septic tank in Jamalpur’s Islampur upazila on Tuesday night, around three hours after she was reported missing, police said.

The deceased was identified as Nurjahan Begum, 70, of Botchar area in Gaibandha Union. Police recovered her body from the tank beside her home and sent it to the morgue at Jamalpur General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

According to family members, Nurjahan Begum had been living at her brother’s house since her husband died about a decade ago. She went missing on Tuesday afternoon, prompting relatives to search for her in nearby areas. As the search continued without success, the family also made announcements through loudspeakers in an effort to locate her.

Later in the evening, the family and local residents became suspicious after noticing what appeared to be the woman’s clothing inside an abandoned septic tank belonging to a neighbouring resident, Abdul Salam. They alerted others and looked into the tank, where they discovered the elderly woman’s body.

Local residents subsequently informed the police. Officers from Islampur Police Station went to the scene and recovered the body from the abandoned structure.

The incident has caused concern among residents of the area, particularly because the woman was found in a neglected septic tank located close to her home. The circumstances surrounding how she ended up inside the tank remain unclear.

Police said they are treating the cause of death as undetermined until the post-mortem examination is completed. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances of her disappearance and the condition and location of the septic tank as part of the inquiry.

Islampur Police Station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said the body had been recovered and sent to Jamalpur General Hospital for post-mortem examination. The exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem report is received, he said.

The officer added that the necessary legal procedures were under way. The investigation is expected to clarify whether the woman accidentally fell into the abandoned tank or whether there were other circumstances surrounding her death.
