Administrative Oversight Requested Over Savar Urs Gathering

Controversy has intensified in the Savar area as local political and religious factions demand administrative intervention regarding an upcoming Urs Sharif programme. Scheduled to take place at the private residence of Sufi figure Qazi Jabir Al-Jahangir in the Chakulia locality, the event has prompted formal memoranda and appeals to local law enforcement.

Coalition Raises Theological Concerns

A delegation representing various political and religious platforms submitted a formal memorandum to the Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Savar Model Police Station. The signatories, including representatives from Hefazat-e-Islam, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Juba Dal, Bangladesh Khilafah Movement, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, and Jamaat-e-Islami, contend that previous public statements made by Mr Jahangir regarding core religious tenets are conflicting and cause local division.

Maولا Yusuf Sadik Haqqani of the Bangladesh Khilafah Movement noted that the objection focuses on theological interpretations rather than personal grievances. Meanwhile, local representatives from political wings emphasised that maintaining public safety and community harmony remains their primary priority amidst the differing local opinions.

Organiser Denies Allegations

Rejecting the accusations entirely, Qazi Jabir Al-Jahangir stated that the programme represents a quiet, domestic remembrance gathering for his late father, a tradition observed within his family property for nearly two decades. He maintained that no outdoor marquees or public loudspeaker systems are planned for the observance.

Furthermore, Mr Jahangir expressed security apprehensions, referencing a previous violent incident at his residence in late 2024 that resulted in property damage and legal disputes. He has filed a general diary with local authorities to ensure adequate protection.

Official Stance and Local Vigilance

Local administrative bodies have acknowledged the conflicting viewpoints and stepped up vigilance to prevent any deterioration of community order. Mr Md Saiful Islam, the Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer, confirmed that the complainants have been advised to maintain peace while officials review the situation alongside police personnel. Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Mr Md Saiful Alam, noted that law enforcement remains alert to address potential security challenges.
