Two young men were killed after a bus struck their motorcycle at the Bhanga Interchange area of the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Faridpur on Thursday morning.
The victims were identified as Kawser Ahmed Sardar Ratul, 17, who was riding the motorcycle, and his passenger, Mohammad Raju Ahmed, 20. The crash occurred at around 11.30am on 27 August.
Ratul was the son of Shahadat Sardar of Jandi village in Tujarpur Union, Bhanga Upazila. Raju was the son of Khokon Matubbar of Fukuhati village, also in Bhanga.
According to local residents and police sources, the two were travelling on a motorcycle along the expressway when a Golden Line Transport bus travelling from Faridpur towards Dhaka struck them. The bus reportedly hit the motorcycle while travelling in the same lane and then left the scene.
The impact threw the motorcycle onto the road, leaving it badly damaged. Both riders suffered critical injuries in the collision.
Local people were among the first to respond after the crash. Police and Fire Service personnel later arrived at the scene and helped rescue the injured pair. They were initially taken to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
As their condition deteriorated, the two were subsequently transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for more advanced medical care. Their condition remained critical, however, and arrangements were made to take them to Dhaka for further treatment.
They died on the way to Dhaka.
The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by motorcyclists on major highways, where buses and other heavy vehicles often travel at considerably higher speeds. A collision involving a motorcycle can be particularly severe because riders have far less physical protection than occupants of larger vehicles.
Sub-Inspector Azadur Rahman of Bhanga Highway Police Station confirmed the deaths. He said the motorcycle involved in the crash and the bodies of the two victims had been taken into police custody.
The bodies will be handed over to their family members after completion of the necessary legal procedures, the police officer said.
Police also said legal proceedings in connection with the accident were under way. The bus reportedly fled the scene following the collision, and the circumstances surrounding the crash are being examined as part of the ongoing process.
