A romantic dispute escalated into a violent village confrontation in Madaripur’s Rajoir upazila on Thursday morning, leaving at least ten people injured and forcing local law enforcement to intervene.

The clashes erupted around half-past ten in the morning within Purba Swarmangal village, situated under the Rajoir municipality, and continued unabated for nearly an hour. The roots of the violence trace back to the previous night. On Wednesday evening, a verbal altercation broke out between residents of Hridoy Nandi village’s cluster community and locals from Purba Swarmangal village. The dispute centred on interference in a romantic relationship involving a young couple, with supporters of former councillor Azizul Rahman Howlader Rahim locking horns with associates of Zakaria Khalashi.

As the grievances festered overnight without formal resolution, morning tensions quickly spilled over into open hostility. Armed with crude, locally made weapons, factions from both communities converged and engaged in a pitched battle that disrupted the entire neighbourhood and sent terrified residents scrambling for safety.

The violent clash left at least ten individuals wounded, among them local residents named Yar Ali and Akkas. Emergency responders and bystanders rushed the casualties to the Rajoir Upazila Health Complex and various nearby clinics. While several victims received standard outpatient treatment locally, the severity of injuries sustained by two individuals prompted attending doctors to transfer them urgently to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

Local police forces arrived swiftly at the scene after receiving alerts regarding the widespread disturbance. Officers managed to restore order and establish control over the area, preventing further escalation.

Sheikh Aminul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of Rajoir Police Station, confirmed that officers moved quickly upon being notified. He noted that the local security situation is currently stable and normal. While the community experienced a wave of panic during the morning hours, the swift police presence has prevented additional flare-ups, leaving residents hopeful that local leaders will mediate a lasting peace.
