Renowned Bangladeshi recitation artist Ahkam Ullah is celebrating his 56th birthday today, 30 August, marking another milestone in a career shaped by poetry, cultural activism and organisational leadership.
Born on 30 August 1970, Ahkam Ullah’s full name is Abul Fatha Md Ahkam Ullah Imam Khan, while he is popularly known by his nickname, Amal. Over the years, he has established himself as a familiar figure in Bangladesh’s cultural arena, particularly through his work in recitation and cultural organisations.
The son of former Bangladesh Police Assistant Superintendent Md Ali Imam Khan and Sufia Imam, Ahkam Ullah received his early education at St Gregory’s School before studying at Notre Dame College. He later graduated with honours in Economics from the University of Dhaka.
Although his academic background was in economics, cultural activities became a defining part of his professional and public life. His engagement with recitation developed into a long-standing artistic pursuit, while his organisational work brought him into broader cultural movements across the country.
For many years, Ahkam Ullah was involved in leading the cultural organisation Swarashruti. Through the organisation and his wider cultural activities, he contributed to the promotion of recitation and the wider practice of Bengali literary and cultural expression.

He also serves as general secretary of the Bangladesh Abritti Samanway Parishad, maintaining an active role in organising and coordinating cultural activities.
