A student of Feni Polytechnic Institute has been taken into police custody following allegations that he posted obscene remarks on Facebook concerning female students and the institute’s principal.
The student, identified as Morshed Alam Adib, is a third-semester student in the Electrical Department. According to fellow students, he is also an active worker of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s branch at the institute.
The incident took place at around 11pm on Monday (31 August). Students alleged that Adib published an offensive post from his personal Facebook account containing obscene comments about female residents of the institute’s women’s hostel.
The post reportedly came to the attention of other students soon afterwards, prompting anger on the campus. Students then detained Adib at the hostel and informed the college authorities about the incident.
Teachers subsequently went to the hostel to assess the situation and verify the allegations. During questioning, Adib reportedly admitted responsibility for the post and apologised to those present. He was then handed over to the police.
Rubel Moghol, convener of Feni Polytechnic Chhatra Dal, said he was outside the campus when the incident occurred. After receiving news of the situation, he returned to the institute and attempted to calm the students. He also informed members of the teaching staff about the incident.
Mushfikur Rahman, a fellow student, said such obscene remarks about female classmates were unacceptable. He claimed that Adib was an active Shibir worker on the campus and called for his expulsion from the institute.
Feni Polytechnic Institute Vice-Principal Rupak Kanti confirmed that allegations had been made against the student over obscene comments concerning female students and the principal.
According to the vice-principal, Adib accepted responsibility during questioning and apologised for his conduct. The administration has, for the time being, decided against filing a case or formal complaint, taking into consideration the student’s future.
Adib’s family has been informed of the incident. The administration said he would be handed over to his family once they arrived at the institute.
The matter is also expected to be discussed at a meeting of the college administration on Tuesday morning. The meeting will consider what institutional action should be taken against the student.
The incident has drawn attention to the responsibilities of students when using social media, particularly when posts concern fellow students or members of an educational institution. What may begin as an individual social media post can quickly affect the wider campus environment when it involves personal or offensive remarks.
For now, the final decision rests with the institute administration, which is expected to determine the appropriate disciplinary measures after reviewing the incident.
