A madrasa teacher has been arrested in Birampur, Dinajpur, after allegedly sexually abusing three child students at a Hafizia madrasa. Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a court, where he reportedly gave a confessional statement concerning the alleged offences. He was subsequently sent to jail through a court order.
The accused has been identified as Hasan Ali, 25, a resident of Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur. He had been working as a teacher at the madrasa for about a year. The alleged incidents came to light early on Friday when local residents detained him and later handed him over to the police.
A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act by the father of one of the alleged victims. Police then formally arrested Hasan Ali in connection with the case.
He was taken before Senior Judicial Magistrate Zainul Abedin at the Dinajpur court on Friday afternoon. During the proceedings, the accused reportedly gave a confessional statement regarding the alleged sexual abuse of the three children. Following the court proceedings, he was sent to jail.
Sohel Rana, an inspector of the Birampur police station and the investigating officer in the case, said the accused had admitted before the court to abusing the three children. Police are continuing their investigation, and a final report will be submitted to the court after the investigation is completed.
The allegations have raised wider concerns about the safety and protection of children living or studying in religious educational institutions, particularly where supervision and institutional safeguards may be limited. Child protection specialists generally stress the need for responsible adults to maintain clear safeguarding procedures, ensure that children have safe channels for reporting abuse and respond promptly to complaints.
A video recorded after the teacher was detained, in which local residents were seen questioning him, has also emerged. In the recording, Hasan Ali allegedly claimed that he had sexually abused seven students at the madrasa on different occasions and had recorded some of the alleged acts. He also reportedly made a much broader claim involving students from different madrasas. These statements are allegations made during questioning and will require independent verification through the ongoing investigation and judicial process.
According to members of the madrasa’s management committee, the institution was established in 2020 and has operated largely with financial support from local donors and committee members. The madrasa previously had another teacher, who left his position after working there for about two years. Hasan Ali was subsequently appointed to the post and had been teaching there for roughly a year.
The alleged abuse has caused distress within the local community and prompted renewed questions about how children are supervised in educational settings. While the criminal case proceeds, the identities and privacy of the children involved require protection. Any further allegations arising during the investigation will need to be examined by law enforcement authorities and established through due legal process.
Police said the investigation remains under way. The accused will face the legal proceedings arising from the case, while investigators are expected to examine the allegations, statements and other available evidence before submitting their final report to the court.
