A 45-year-old woman has been detained after four kilograms of cannabis were allegedly recovered from her bags during a security check at the Secretariat Metro Rail Station in Dhaka.
The woman, identified as Shiuli, was detained at around 5.50pm on Sunday (6 September) in front of Gate C of Concourse-1 at the station. She was undergoing routine screening when members of the MRT Police reportedly became suspicious of her movements and decided to search the bags she was carrying.
According to the police, the search uncovered four packets wrapped in black paper. The packets were found inside a shopping bag and a shoulder bag carried by Shiuli. Officers subsequently identified the contents as a total of four kilograms of cannabis.
Shiuli is the wife of Jahangir and is from the Kachpur area under Sonargaon police station in Narayanganj. Police have not yet disclosed where the cannabis was allegedly obtained or where it was being taken.
The recovery took place during routine security checks at the busy metro station. Such checks are intended primarily to identify prohibited or dangerous items being carried into the metro system, while suspicious circumstances can lead to a more detailed search.
MRT Police Inspector (Operations) Mohammad Mohsin Sheikh confirmed the detention and said Shiuli was questioned initially after the alleged recovery. Police also prepared a seizure list documenting the drugs and other relevant evidence collected during the operation.
The suspect and the seized cannabis were in the process of being handed over to the appropriate police station for further legal proceedings, officials said. A case under the Narcotics Control Act was also being prepared against her.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged possession of the cannabis, including its source and intended destination, are expected to form part of the investigation. Police will also examine whether the woman was acting alone or whether others may have been involved in transporting the substance.
The detention comes as security screening remains an integral part of metro rail operations in the capital. With large numbers of passengers using the system, authorities routinely monitor access points and inspect baggage when necessary.
Under Bangladesh’s narcotics laws, the unlawful possession, transportation, supply or handling of controlled drugs can lead to criminal proceedings, depending on the substance, quantity and circumstances involved. The final legal outcome in this case will depend on the investigation and subsequent judicial process.
At this stage, the allegations against Shiuli remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings. The recovery of the four kilograms of cannabis, along with the seizure record and other evidence, will be considered as the case progresses.
