Bangladesh’s cinematic presence has reached a significant new milestone with the world premiere of The Difficult Bride at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in Italy. Directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, the film has been selected for the prestigious Orizzonti competition, placing a Bangladeshi feature-length production in one of the festival’s internationally recognised competitive sections.
The selection marks a notable moment for Bangladesh, as The Difficult Bride has become the first Bangladeshi feature film to have its world premiere at the Venice festival. The achievement gives the film an important international platform while bringing greater attention to Bangladesh’s contemporary filmmaking and storytelling.
The film draws heavily on memories from director Rubaiyat Hossain’s childhood. She has spent nearly two decades developing the idea behind the project, which originated from a story she heard at a beauty parlour when she was young and from memories that remained with her over the years. Those recollections eventually developed into a film centred on a beauty parlour in Dhaka, a wedding and an unsettling story rooted in childhood.
Rather than relying on a conventional setting, the film brings together familiar elements of urban life and wedding culture with a disturbing childhood memory. The combination provides the narrative with a distinctive foundation and allows an everyday social environment to become the backdrop for a more unusual cinematic story.
Another defining feature of The Difficult Bride is its predominantly female-led technical crew. Women headed almost every major department of the production, including cinematography, editing and production design, with the exception of the background music department.
Hossain has highlighted the contribution of the women technicians involved in the project, describing their skill and efficiency as remarkable. The director has also said that the film challenged the misconception that women cannot make strong or successful films. The production therefore represents not only a creative undertaking but also a notable example of women taking leading technical roles across several key areas of filmmaking.
The film features newcomer Zainine Chowdhury Karim in the principal role. Rikta Nandini Shimu and Sunerah Binte Kamal also appear in significant roles, while Azmeri Haque Badhon and Damir Khan feature in guest appearances. The combination of a new lead performer with established actors adds further variety to the cast.
The Difficult Bride is a co-production involving France, Portugal, Norway, Germany and Bangladesh’s Khona Talkies. Its international production structure reflects the film’s wider ambitions beyond the domestic market and provides a foundation for screenings in different regions.
Following its Venice premiere, the film is scheduled to be shown in various parts of the world during the current year. Bangladeshi audiences, meanwhile, are expected to see the film in cinemas next year.
For Bangladesh’s film industry, the Venice selection represents a significant step on the international festival circuit.
