Police have arrested 13 people in a sweeping operation across Sonargaon in Narayanganj, targeting suspects and accused individuals linked to drug-related offences, other crimes, arrest warrants, political cases and regular criminal cases.
The arrests were made from different parts of the upazila on Monday morning, 7 September, as police stepped up enforcement activities aimed at bringing accused individuals before the law and tackling drug-related offences in the area.
Among those arrested are Mamun Mia, 35, from Purba Behakaier; Amjad Hossain, 48, and Sumon, 38, from Khamargaon; Apu, 22, from Bhargaon; Russell, 30, from Goaldi; Shafi Uddin, 38, from Habibpur; Jahangir Alam, 50, from Kutubpur; and Ramzan Hossain, 30, from Daulatpur.
Police also arrested Al Amin of Panchamighat, who was wanted under an arrest warrant. Kawsar Ahmed, 27, a resident of Sherpur Sadar who was living as a tenant in the Bari Majlish area of Sonargaon, was arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Abdul Karim, 59, from the Bhargaon Adampur area, was arrested in connection with a political case. Two others, Ujjal, 38, from Habibpur, and Mohammad Hridoy, 23, from Bari Majlish, were arrested in connection with regular criminal cases.
The operation brought together arrests involving several categories of cases, reflecting the police effort to locate people wanted in existing cases while also taking action against suspected drug-related offences. Sonargaon police said such operations are being conducted as part of ongoing efforts to maintain law and order and curb the spread of narcotics.
Mohammad Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, confirmed the arrests. He said the arrested individuals had been produced before the court and subsequently sent to jail custody.
The police officer also said operations aimed at eliminating drugs would continue across the area. Action against drug users through summary trials would also remain part of the enforcement effort, according to the police.
Drug-related offences remain a significant law-enforcement concern because they can be linked to wider public-order problems and other forms of criminal activity. Police operations of this nature generally focus on identifying suspects, executing outstanding warrants and ensuring that individuals accused in ongoing cases are brought before the judicial process.
The latest arrests have now moved into the legal process, with the accused being dealt with through the courts. The allegations against them will ultimately be determined through judicial proceedings. Under the principle of due process, an accused person is not considered guilty unless the charge is established in court.
