An HSC candidate who was critically injured in a road accident in Hathazari, Chattogram, has died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka. Mahin died at Evercare Hospital at around 9.45am on Monday, 7 September, after spending several days in critical condition.
The accident occurred on 2 September on the Hathazari-Nazirhat road, in front of Charia Board School in Mirzapur Union. A CNG-powered auto-rickshaw carrying Mahin and several other HSC candidates was involved in a collision with a microbus. Four HSC students were injured in the crash.
The auto-rickshaw driver, Mohammad Ershad, 35, died at the scene. Three people travelling in the microbus were also injured in the collision.
Mahin was initially taken to a hospital in Chattogram for treatment. As his condition deteriorated, his family and doctors arranged for him to be transferred to Dhaka for specialised medical care. He was admitted to Evercare Hospital, where he remained under treatment for several days before his death on Monday morning.
His death has left his family, classmates and the local community in mourning. Mahin was preparing for his HSC examinations, and his sudden death has brought a painful end to the hopes and plans surrounding his education and future.
Two of the other injured students have been identified as Tawsif Ahmed Rafi and Erfanul Anwar Fahim. Several seriously injured people from the accident were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Local residents described Mahin’s death as deeply distressing, particularly because he was a young student at an important stage of his education. They expressed sympathy for his bereaved family and concern over the consequences of the crash, which claimed one life at the scene and subsequently resulted in another fatality.
The accident also highlights the vulnerability of passengers travelling on busy regional roads, where collisions involving public transport, private vehicles and other road users can have serious consequences. In this case, the crash left people travelling in both vehicles injured and required prolonged medical treatment for some of the victims.
Hathazari Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidur Rahman confirmed that Mahin had died while receiving treatment in Dhaka. He said police had learnt from the family that the body was being brought from Dhaka to Nangalmora in Hathazari.
The officer also said necessary legal steps were being taken in connection with the accident. The circumstances surrounding the collision will form part of the ongoing legal process.
With Mahin’s death, the road crash has resulted in two fatalities, including the auto-rickshaw driver who died at the scene. The remaining injured victims are continuing to receive medical attention, while the bereaved family prepares to bring home the body of a young student whose life was cut tragically short.
