Taka Stabilises Against US Dollar Following Central Bank Policy Adjustments

Bangladesh’s foreign exchange market shows encouraging signs of stability as the local currency recovers ground following recent policy adjustments mandated by international financial partners. With expanding international trade driving foreign exchange demand across the country, exchange rates have experienced fluctuations in recent months. However, robust remittance inflows and strict monitoring by Bangladesh Bank have helped narrow the gap between official bank rates and the open market, offering a welcome reprieve for importers and local businesses.

In July, interbank dollar rates initially held steady at 122.78 taka before climbing to a peak of 123.82 taka. This upward movement was largely driven by compliance with International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan conditions, which required gradual adjustments to the dollar exchange rate and a minor devaluation of the taka. Despite these regulatory shifts, adequate foreign currency liquidity across commercial banks has allowed the rate to settle back to its prior level of 122.78 taka per dollar.

According to official figures released by Bangladesh Bank and commercial lenders on Tuesday, 8th September 2026, the lowest exchange rates recorded across major global currencies reflect this broader stabilization trend. The US Dollar stands at 122.78 taka, while the Euro trades at 142.68 taka and the British Pound Sterling is valued at 166.21 taka. Among Commonwealth currencies, the Canadian Dollar trades at 88.87 taka and the Australian Dollar sits at 88.58 taka.

Asian regional currencies show a similar pattern of steady trading. The Singapore Dollar is priced at 96.97 taka, the Chinese Yuan at 18.30 taka, and the Indian Rupee trades at 1.29 taka. High-volume Middle Eastern currencies remain key benchmarks due to foreign remittance channels: the Kuwaiti Dinar leads at 396.94 taka, followed by the Qatari Riyal at 33.71 taka, the UAE Dirham at 33.46 taka, the Saudi Riyal at 32.97 taka, and the Malaysian Ringgit at 30.39 taka. Financial analysts emphasize that exchange rates remain subject to ongoing market adjustments based on trade flow demand.
