A young man lost his life on Tuesday after being apprehended and assaulted by security personnel and staff while allegedly attempting to commit burglary at the Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area. The deceased, estimated to be around 25 years of age, remains unidentified.
The incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 am near the Satrasta intersection in Tejgaon. According to eyewitness accounts and site officials, three youths scaled the perimeter wall of the state-owned telecommunications establishment to break in. On-duty members of the Ansar security auxiliary, alongside office workers, intercepted the intruders. While two of the suspects managed to scale back over the boundary wall and flee, one was caught on the premises.
According to Shawkat Ali, a caretaker at the BTCL office, the situation deteriorated rapidly after the youth was apprehended. The suspect reportedly struck an Ansar member in a desperate attempt to break free and escape. Security guards and employees subsequently restrained the young man, binding his hands before inflicting a severe physical beating that left him critically injured.
The victim remained at the scene in a precarious condition for several hours before being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at roughly 3:30 pm. Upon arrival, attending emergency physicians pronounced him dead.
Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost, confirmed that the victim’s body has been placed in the hospital morgue pending a formal post-mortem examination. Law enforcement authorities from the local police station have been formally notified and are currently preparing legal proceedings.
Vigilantism and mob justice remain persistent public safety challenges across urban centres in Bangladesh, particularly when suspects are caught committing petty property crimes. Whilst facilities belonging to state infrastructure entities like BTCL utilise Ansar detachments to safeguard valuable telecommunication equipment and physical assets, security personnel are bound by statutory law to detain suspects and immediately hand them over to law enforcement. Physical violence and extrajudicial punishment fall strictly outside their legal mandate.
Investigating officers are currently working to establish the identity of the deceased using fingerprint analysis and biometric databases, whilst also attempting to track down the two accomplices who escaped. A comprehensive police inquiry will determine the exact cause of death and identify the individual staff members and security personnel responsible for the fatal assault.
